Waikato Landscapes
From ancient forests to lush farmland, extinct volcanic cones, fast flowing rivers, wild West Coast beaches and beautiful gardens, the Waikato area has so much to offer an artist.
There's a wonderful sense of open skies and fresh air when I set off with my sketch book to capture an iconic view or cloud formation that is the catalyst for a painting. Using a palette knife in a very expressionist style, it's the absorbed atmosphere that I endeavor to work into my paintings.
When concentrating on painting the landscape, an idea conceptualises itself in my head and I reach for my sketch pad. This is maybe generated by a fleeting image as I drive through the diverse Waikato countryside, by shadows on a paddock, the pattern of foliage in the bush or an iconic shed.
I then start the process of paint on canvas into imagery, using a palette knife - my preferred tool for creating painterly work
