The wide open skies, the green pastures, trees - both native and exotic, mountains, rivers and lakes, together with isolated signs of habitation such as fence posts, farm houses with colourful gardens - and water tanks set high on a hill. These paintings evolved from many hours of observing and sketching the local countryside and gardens, noting such things as cloud shapes, light, varieties of trees, broken down sheds or tonal values across the distant paddocks. Each one began with a particular feature of the Waikato landscape that had caught my eye, and as I worked at the easel the 'mood' of the painting developed.
